The story behind the shelves

Stratum Books began as a small operation in Gatineau, Quebec, founded by a team of bibliophiles who believed that every book deserves careful stewardship. Over more than a decade, we have grown into a full-service literary consultancy trusted by private collectors, university libraries, and heritage organizations across the country.

Our name reflects our philosophy: each book is a layer — a stratum — in the broader landscape of human knowledge. We treat every volume with the respect it deserves, whether it is a paperback novel or a seventeenth-century manuscript. Our specialists combine traditional bookcraft with modern archival science to deliver results that endure.

What sets us apart is our personal approach. We do not operate at arm's length. Every project begins with a conversation, and every solution is shaped by the specific needs of the reader, collector, or institution we serve.

What we offer

A comprehensive range of book services designed for individuals and institutions who value quality, knowledge, and care.

Book curation

We build bespoke collections tailored to your interests, whether you are developing a home library focused on Canadian literature, assembling a research archive, or curating titles for a boutique hotel. Our curators research, recommend, and acquire volumes that align perfectly with your vision and budget.

Rare book sourcing

Tracking down elusive titles is our specialty. Through a network of dealers, auction houses, and private sellers spanning North America and Europe, we locate first editions, signed copies, out-of-print works, and historically significant volumes that would be nearly impossible to find on your own.

Restoration and conservation

Our conservators repair damaged bindings, stabilize fragile pages, clean foxing and stains, and create custom protective enclosures. We follow archival best practices endorsed by the Canadian Conservation Institute, ensuring your books are preserved for future generations without compromising their historical integrity.

Literary consulting

Need guidance on building an institutional collection policy, appraising a private library, or cataloguing an estate? Our consultants bring deep subject-matter knowledge and practical experience. We work with libraries, museums, law firms handling estates, and insurance companies requiring accurate valuations.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a typical book sourcing project take?
Timelines vary depending on the rarity of the title. Common out-of-print works can often be located within two to four weeks. Genuinely rare first editions or manuscripts may require several months of active searching. We provide realistic estimates upfront and keep you informed throughout the process.
Do you work with clients outside Quebec?
Absolutely. While our workshop is based in Gatineau, we serve clients across every Canadian province and territory. We also accept projects from the United States and Europe. Consultations are conducted by phone, video call, or email, and we arrange insured shipping for physical items.
What does book restoration cost?
Costs depend on the extent of damage and the type of binding. Minor repairs such as re-gluing a loose spine start at around $80 per volume. Full rebinding or conservation-grade treatment for fragile historical texts can range from $300 to $1,200. We always provide a written quote before beginning any work.
Can you appraise a book collection for insurance purposes?
Yes. Our consultants produce detailed written appraisals that are accepted by major Canadian insurance providers. Each appraisal includes individual item descriptions, condition assessments, and current fair-market valuations supported by comparable sales data.
Is the initial consultation really free?
Yes. The discovery call is complimentary and typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes. It gives us enough information to prepare a meaningful proposal and gives you a chance to evaluate whether we are the right fit for your needs — with zero financial commitment.
